Christmas story, music, and Santa part of ‘Lighting Up Wayland’

PLAINVIEW – Wayland Baptist University President Dr. Donna Hedgepath warmly invites the Greater Plainview community to celebrate the season at the university’s annual “Lighting Up Wayland” event on Thursday, Dec. 5.

The festivities begin at 7:30 p.m. at Gates Circle, 1900 West Seventh St., immediately following the downtown lighted Christmas parade.

“This special time of year is a wonderful opportunity for us to come together as a community,” Dr. Hedgepath said. “I encourage everyone to join us as we celebrate the joy and unity of the Christmas season.”

A cherished Wayland tradition, the evening will include Dr. Hedgepath reading the Christmas Story from the Bible, followed by the ceremonial lighting of historic Gates Hall. Wayland’s choirs, joined by faculty and staff, will lead attendees in singing beloved Christmas carols, filling the evening with the sounds of the season.

“The spirit of Dr. Hedgepath’s ‘Better Together’ theme for the school year is reflected in this event,” university officials said. “It’s a time for families and friends to join hands and hearts with Wayland to celebrate what makes this season truly special.”

Guests of all ages can enjoy a variety of activities, including meeting Santa Claus and ringing bells while singing along to carols. Free hot dogs, s’mores, and hot cocoa will be served, making it a festive evening for the entire family.

The Wayland wagon, beautifully illuminated in the center of Gates Circle, will serve as a centerpiece for photos. With the lighting of Gates Hall and other campus decorations, there will be plenty of other memorable holiday photo opportunities.

West Texas Gifts & More, located behind Gates Hall in McClung University Center, will also offer extended shopping hours during the event, providing guests with the chance to find unique holiday gifts.

“Lighting Up Wayland” promises an evening of joy, community, and Christmas spirit as Wayland Baptist University and the Plainview community come together to celebrate the season.
